Jim Elliot was one of eight children raised by Fred and Clara Elliot in Portland, Oregon. Fred Elliot was a traveling pastor in the Plymouth Brethren church. From an early age, around six weeks old, Jim attended church and Sunday School Classes. Faith was an important aspect of Jim’s childhood, as his parents made it high priority for themselves and their children. Jim was raised to have a very obedient faith, which was very tied to closely to the Bible.

Jim attended Benson Polytechnic High School, where he studied drawing. His friends recall him always having a bible with him, and requiring minimal prompt to begin lecturing about his faith. His teachers hailed him as a skillful orator and debater, which he used to spread his faith to his classmates. Jim chose to attend Wheaton College in Illinois after his time at Benson
